Eksil Pup Installation Guide

Note regarding Installing to USB

Puppy Linux has a very unique way of installing to USB. For the best installation it has been proven, that installing from an official Puppy Linux, using the Stickpup USB installer has the best results (especially for UEFI systems).

Using other tools:

Balena Etcher can write to USB and has been proven to provide a bootable USB that will work on BIOS systems.(please see known bugs at the bottom of this page).

Checksum

To ensure the integrity of the .iso image please check the sha256sum matches the one shown below:

How to check a SHA256sum

On Linux

Open a terminal

cd into the folder where you downloaded then run the command below:

sha256sum eksilpup64.iso

On Windows Powershell

open a Powershell terminal

cd into the folder where you downloaded then run the command below:

Get-FileHash .\eksilpup64.iso -Algorithm SHA256

Mac OS Terminal

open a terminal

cd into the folder where you downloaded then run the command below:

shasum -a 256 eksilpup64.iso


Installing to USB

Best practice is to download and install to USB using an official Puppy Linux OS.

This is Due to it having the correct tools to make the USB bootable for UEFI systems.

Installing to USB on Puppy Linux

  1. Download and verify as shown above
  2. Insert a USB
  3. Go to: Menu > Setup > Stickpup
  4. Select: ISO
  5. Go to Downloads and select the networkpup64.iso image
  6. Select the USB you want to install it on
  7. Click ok and the OS will be installed to the USB

Installing From Other Operating Systems

This has been proven to work for BIOS systems.

  1. Download and verify as shown above
  2. insert USB
  3. Format USB to FAT32 using MBR as the partition table
  4. Download Balena Etcher USB Image Writer
  5. Open Balena Etcher
  6. Select flash from file and select the .iso file
  7. Select Target: pick the USB you want to install it to
  8. Click Flash

Known Bugs

The following are bugs that have been reported:

Slow boot times on BIOS load: The OS seems to hang for a short period whilst loading ZRAM swap. Please be patient and the OS will load. This is only present with when writing to USB with Balena Etcher.

NMAP Missing Library: Althought the library is installed NMAP seems to state it is Missing to fix this run the following command in the terminal:

pkg get libblas3
